„Mönche und Nonnen, ich bin nicht einmal unbeschwert, wenn ich an einen Ort denke, an dem die Mönche und Nonnen uneins sind, zanken, streiten und einander fortwährend mit scharfen Worten verletzen, und erst recht nicht, wenn ich hingehe. Ich komme über sie zu dem Schluss: ‚Diese Ehrwürdigen haben offensichtlich drei Dinge aufgegeben und drei Dinge gepflegt.‘ Welche drei Dinge haben sie aufgegeben? Entsagende, wohlwollende und mildherzige Gedanken. Welche drei Dinge haben sie gepflegt? Sinnliche, böswillige und grausame Gedanken. … Ich komme über sie zu dem Schluss: ‚Diese Ehrwürdigen haben offensichtlich drei Dinge aufgegeben und drei Dinge gepflegt.‘
Ich bin unbeschwert, wenn ich zu einem Ort gehe, an dem die Nonnen und Mönche in Eintracht leben, sich gegenseitig wertschätzen, ohne Streit, sich wie Milch und Wasser mischen und einander mit freundlichen Augen betrachten, und erst recht, wenn ich daran denke. Ich komme über sie zu dem Schluss: ‚Diese Ehrwürdigen haben offensichtlich drei Dinge aufgegeben und drei Dinge gepflegt.‘ Welche drei Dinge haben sie aufgegeben? Thoughts of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness. What three things have they cultivated? I feel comfortable going to a place where the mendicants live in harmony—appreciating each other, without quarreling, blending like milk and water, and regarding each other with kindly eyes—let alone thinking about it. Niṭṭhamettha gacchāmi: ‘addhā te āyasmanto tayo dhamme pajahiṁsu, tayo dhamme bahulamakaṁsu. Katame tayo dhamme pajahiṁsu? Nekkhammavitakkaṁ, abyāpādavitakkaṁ, avihiṁsāvitakkaṁ— ime tayo dhamme pajahiṁsu. Katame tayo dhamme bahulamakaṁsu? Kāmavitakkaṁ, byāpādavitakkaṁ, vihiṁsāvitakkaṁ— ime tayo dhamme bahulamakaṁsu’.
