1. Das Kapitel über den Wald

Ein Vajjier

Einmal hielt sich ein gewisser Mönch von den Vajjiern bei Vesālī in einem gewissen Waldstück auf.

Nun hielten zu dieser Zeit die Vajjier in Vesālī ein Fest, das die ganze Nacht andauerte. Da klagte dieser Mönch über den Lärm der Musikinstrumente, die geschlagen und gespielt wurden, und sagte bei dieser Gelegenheit diese Strophe auf:

„Wir leben allein in der Wildnis wie ein weggeworfenes Stück Holz im Wald. Wer ist in einer Nacht wie dieser schlechter dran als ich?“

Eine Gottheit, die in diesem Waldstück hauste, fühlte Anteilnahme für diesen Mönch und war auf sein Wohl bedacht. Sie begab sich zu ihm in der Absicht, ihn aufzurütteln, und redete ihn mit einer Strophe an:

„Du lebst allein in der Wildnis wie ein weggeworfenes Stück Holz im Wald. Viele Menschen beneiden dich, wie die Wesen in der Hölle die beneiden, die in den Himmel kommen.“

Von dieser Gottheit angetrieben, wurde dieser Mönch von einem Gefühl der Dringlichkeit ergriffen.

A Vajji

At one time a certain Vajjian mendicant was staying near Vesālī in a certain forest grove.

Now at that time the Vajjis were holding an all-night event in Vesālī. Then that mendicant, complaining at the noise of musical instruments being beaten and played, on that occasion spoke this verse:

“We dwell alone in the wilderness, like a log dumped in the forest. On a night like this, who’s worse off than me?”

The deity haunting that forest had sympathy for that mendicant, and wanted what’s best for them. So they approached that mendicant wanting to stir them up, and addressed them in verse:

“You dwell alone in the wilderness, like a log dumped in the forest. Lots of people are jealous of you, like beings in hell of those going to heaven.”

Impelled by that deity, that mendicant was struck with a sense of urgency.

Vajjiputtasutta

Ekaṁ samayaṁ aññataro vajjiputtako bhikkhu vesāliyaṁ viharati aññatarasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe.

Tena kho pana samayena vesāliyaṁ vajjiputtako sabbaratticāro hoti. Atha kho so bhikkhu vesāliyā tūriyatāḷitavāditanigghosasaddaṁ sutvā paridevamāno tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

“Ekakā mayaṁ araññe viharāma, Apaviddhaṁva vanasmiṁ dārukaṁ; Etādisikāya rattiyā, Ko su nāmamhehi pāpiyo”ti.

Atha kho yā tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe adhivatthā devatā tassa bhikkhuno anukampikā atthakāmā taṁ bhikkhuṁ saṁvejetukāmā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

“Ekakova tvaṁ araññe viharasi, Apaviddhaṁva vanasmiṁ dārukaṁ; Tassa te bahukā pihayanti, Nerayikā viya saggagāminan”ti.

Atha kho so bhikkhu tāya devatāya saṁvejito saṁvegamāpādīti.
