Das Verhalten des Affenkönigs

„Als ich ein Affe
in einem Einschnitt am Flussufer war,
wurde ich von einem Krokodil belästigt
und konnte nicht hinüberkommen.

Wo ich gewöhnlich landete,
wenn ich von diesem zum anderen Ufer sprang,
dort kauerte mein Todfeind,
der böse Gharial.

Es wiegte mich in Sicherheit und sagte: ‚Komm!‘
‚Ich komme!‘, sagte ich zu ihm.
Indem ich auf seinen Kopf trat,
schaffte ich es zum anderen Ufer.

Ich sprach keine Lüge zu ihm,
sondern handelte nach meinem Wort.
Es gibt niemanden, der meiner Wahrhaftigkeit gleichkommt:
Das ist meine Vollkommenheit der Wahrheit.“

The Monkey King’s Conduct

“When I was a monkey
in a cleft on the riverbank,
harassed by a crocodile
I could not get across.

Where I used to land
when jumping from the near shore to the far,
there crouched my deadly foe,
the baleful gharial.

Reassuring me, he said ‘Come!’
‘I am coming,’ I said to him.
Stepping on his head
I made it to the far bank.

I spoke no lie to him,
but acted according to my word.
There is no-one to equal my truthfulness:
this is my perfection of truth.”

Kapirājacariya

“Yadā ahaṁ kapi āsiṁ,
nadīkūle darīsaye;
Pīḷito susumārena,
gamanaṁ na labhāmahaṁ.

Yamhokāse ahaṁ ṭhatvā,
orā pāraṁ patāmahaṁ;
Tatthacchi sattu vadhako,
kumbhīlo luddadassano.

So maṁ asaṁsi ‘ehī’ti,
‘ahampemī’ti taṁ vatiṁ;
Tassa matthakamakkamma,
parakūle patiṭṭhahiṁ.

Na tassa alikaṁ bhaṇitaṁ,
yathā vācaṁ akāsahaṁ;
Saccena me samo natthi,
esā me saccapāramī”ti.
