Bhāradvāja der Almosensammler
Man kann nicht leben, indem man fastet,
doch Nahrung führt nicht zum Herzensfrieden.
Da ich sehe, wie dieser Sack voll Knochen von Nahrung erhalten wird,
wandere ich, suchend.
Man weiß, es ist bloß ein Sumpf,
diese Ehrerbietung und Verehrung bei achtbaren Familien.
Ehrerbietung ist ein subtiler Pfeil, schwer herauszuziehen
und für den Frevler schwer aufzugeben.
So wurden diese Strophen vom Ehrwürdigen Bhāradvāja dem Almosensammler, dem altehrwürdigen Mönch, aufgesagt.
Chapter One
Bhāradvāja the Alms-Gatherer
You can’t live by fasting,
but food doesn’t lead to peace of heart.
Seeing how this bag of bones is sustained by food,
I wander, seeking.
They know it’s just a swamp,
this homage and veneration in respectable families.
Honor is a subtle dart, hard to extract,
and hard for a reprobate to give up.
That is how these verses were recited by the senior venerable Bhāradvāja the Alms-Gatherer.
Paṭhamavagga
Piṇḍolabhāradvājattheragāthā
“Nayidaṁ anayena jīvitaṁ,
Nāhāro hadayassa santiko;
Āhāraṭṭhitiko samussayo,
Iti disvāna carāmi esanaṁ.
Paṅkoti hi naṁ pavedayuṁ,
Yāyaṁ vandanapūjanā kulesu;
Sukhumaṁ sallaṁ durubbahaṁ,
Sakkāro kāpurisena dujjaho”ti.
Itthaṁ sudaṁ āyasmā piṇḍolabhāradvājo thero gāthāyo abhāsitthāti.
