Anūpama

Der eingebildete Geist, süchtig nach Vergnügen,
spießt sich auf seinen eigenen Pflock auf.
Er geht immer dahin,
wo ein Pflock ist oder ein Hackbrett.

Ich nenne dich den Verlierergeist!
Ich nenne dich den heimtückischen Geist!
Du hast den Lehrer gefunden, der so schwer zu finden ist –
führe mich nicht vom Ziel weg!

Chapter Five

Anūpama

The conceited mind, addicted to pleasure,
impales itself on its own stake.
It always goes where
there’s a stake, a chopping board.

I declare you the loser mind!
I declare you the insidious mind!
You’ve found the teacher so hard to find—
don’t lead me away from the goal.

“Nandamānāgataṁ cittaṁ,
sūlamāropamānakaṁ;
Tena teneva vajasi,
yena sūlaṁ kaliṅgaraṁ.

Tāhaṁ cittakaliṁ brūmi,
taṁ brūmi cittadubbhakaṁ;
Satthā te dullabho laddho,
mānatthe maṁ niyojayī”ti.
