Uttarapāla

Ich war sehr wohl ein kluger Gelehrter,
in der Lage, über die Bedeutung nachzudenken.
Die fünf Sinnesreize in der Welt,
die so trügerisch sind, waren mein Untergang.

Ich sprang in Māras Hoheitsgebiet
und wurde von einem mächtigen Pfeil getroffen.
Doch es gelang mir, mich aus der Falle zu befreien,
die der König des Todes gelegt hatte.

Alle Sinnenfreuden habe ich aufgegeben;
alle Wiedergeburten sind zerschmettert;
das Umherwandern durch Geburten ist beendet;
künftige Leben wird es jetzt nicht mehr geben.

Chapter One

Uttarapāla

I was, indeed, an astute scholar,
competent to think on the meaning.
The five kinds of sensual stimulation in the world,
so delusory, were my downfall.

Leaping into Māra’s domain,
I was struck by a powerful dart.
But I was able to free myself
from the trap laid by the King of Death.

I have given up all sensual pleasures;
all rebirths are shattered;
transmigration through births is finished;
now there’ll be no more future lives.

“Paṇḍitaṁ vata maṁ santaṁ,
alamatthavicintakaṁ;
Pañca kāmaguṇā loke,
sammohā pātayiṁsu maṁ.

Pakkhando māravisaye,
daḷhasallasamappito;
Asakkhiṁ maccurājassa,
ahaṁ pāsā pamuccituṁ.

Sabbe kāmā pahīnā me,
bhavā sabbe padālitā;
Vikkhīṇo jātisaṁsāro,
natthi dāni punabbhavo”ti.
