Dhaniya

Wenn du im Glück leben willst
und dich nach dem Asketenleben sehnst,
schau nicht auf die Roben des Saṅgha herab
oder auf sein Essen und Trinken.

Wenn du im Glück leben willst
und dich nach dem Asketenleben sehnst,
bleibe in den Behausungen des Saṅgha
wie eine Schlange, die im Mauseloch lebt.

Wenn du im Glück leben willst
und dich nach dem Asketenleben sehnst,
entwickle diese eine Eigenschaft:
Sei zufrieden mit dem, was geboten wird.

Chapter One

Dhaniya

If you wish to live in happiness,
longing for the ascetic life,
don’t look down on the Saṅgha’s robes,
or its food and drinks.

If you wish to live in happiness,
longing for the ascetic life,
stay in the Saṅgha’s lodgings
like a snake making use of a mouse’s hole.

If you wish to live in happiness,
longing for the ascetic life,
develop this one quality:
be content with whatever is offered.

Paṭhamavagga

Dhaniyattheragāthā

“Sukhañce jīvituṁ icche,
sāmaññasmiṁ apekkhavā;
Saṅghikaṁ nātimaññeyya,
cīvaraṁ pānabhojanaṁ.

Sukhañce jīvituṁ icche,
sāmaññasmiṁ apekkhavā;
Ahi mūsikasobbhaṁva,
sevetha sayanāsanaṁ.

Sukhañce jīvituṁ icche,
sāmaññasmiṁ apekkhavā;
Itarītarena tusseyya,
ekadhammañca bhāvaye”ti.
