1. Das erste Kapitel

Nāgasamāla

Mit Juwelen geschmückt und herausgeputzt,
mit Kränzen behangen, mit Sandelholzduft stark parfümiert –
eine solche Dame ist auf der Straße,
eine Tänzerin, die zur Musik tanzt.

Ich ging um Almosen hinein,
und im Vorbeigehen streifte sie mein Blick:
mit Juwelen geschmückt und herausgeputzt,
wie die Schlinge des Todes, die ausgelegt war.

Da kam durch wohlüberlegten Gebrauch des Geistes
die Erkenntnis in mir auf;
die Gefahr wurde klar
und ich wurde gründlich ernüchtert.

Dann war mein Geist befreit –
sieh’ die klare Richtigkeit der Lehre!
Das dreifache Wissen habe ich verwirklicht
und die Anleitung des Buddha erfüllt.

Chapter One

Nāgasamāla

Adorned with jewelry and all dressed up,
with garlands, and sandalwood makeup piled on,
along the main street is a lady—
a dancer dancing as the music plays.

I entered for alms,
and while walking along I glanced at her,
adorned with jewelry and all dressed up,
set up like a snare of death.

Then the realization
came upon me—
the danger became clear,
and I grew firmly disillusioned.

Then my mind was freed—
behold the clear rightness of the teaching!
I’ve attained the three knowledges
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.

Paṭhamavagga

Nāgasamālattheragāthā

“Alaṅkatā suvasanā,
mālinī candanussadā;
Majjhe mahāpathe nārī,
tūriye naccati naṭṭakī.

Piṇḍikāya paviṭṭhohaṁ,
gacchanto naṁ udikkhisaṁ;
Alaṅkataṁ suvasanaṁ,
maccupāsaṁva oḍḍitaṁ.

Tato me manasīkāro,
yoniso udapajjatha;
Ādīnavo pāturahu,
nibbidā samatiṭṭhatha.

Tato cittaṁ vimucci me,
passa dhammasudhammataṁ;
Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.
