1. Das erste Kapitel

Jambuka

Fünfundfünfzig Jahre lang
kleidete ich mich in Staub und Schmutz.
Ich aß ein Mahl im Monat
und riss mir Haare und Bart aus.

Ich stand auf einem Bein,
lehnte einen Sitz ab;
ich aß getrockneten Kot
und nahm kein Essen an, das für mich beiseitegestellt war.

Ich tat viele Dinge dieser Art,
die zu einem schlechten Ort führen.
Von einer großen Flut war ich fortgerissen,
da nahm ich Zuflucht zum Buddha.

Sieh’ das Zufluchtnehmen!
Sieh’ die klare Richtigkeit der Lehre!
Das dreifache Wissen habe ich verwirklicht
und die Anleitung des Buddha erfüllt.

Chapter One

Jambuka

For fifty-five years
I wore dust and dirt.
Eating one meal a month,
I tore out my hair and beard.

I stood on one foot;
I shunned seats;
I ate dried-out dung;
I didn’t accept food set aside for me.

I did many deeds of this kind,
which lead to a bad destination.
Swept away by a great flood,
I went to the Buddha for refuge.

See the going for refuge!
Behold the clear rightness of the teaching!
I’ve attained the three knowledges
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.

Paṭhamavagga

Jambukattheragāthā

“Pañcapaññāsavassāni,
rajojallamadhārayiṁ;
Bhuñjanto māsikaṁ bhattaṁ,
kesamassuṁ alocayiṁ.

Ekapādena aṭṭhāsiṁ,
āsanaṁ parivajjayiṁ;
Sukkhagūthāni ca khādiṁ,
uddesañca na sādiyiṁ.

Etādisaṁ karitvāna,
bahuṁ duggatigāminaṁ;
Vuyhamāno mahoghena,
buddhaṁ saraṇamāgamaṁ.

Saraṇagamanaṁ passa,
passa dhammasudhammataṁ;
Tisso vijjā anuppattā,
kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.
