1. Das erste Kapitel

Kulla

Ich, Kulla, ging zu einem Leichenfeld,
wo ich den verlassenen Körper einer Frau sah,
weggeworfen auf ein Leichenfeld,
voller Maden, die daran fraßen.

„Kulla, betrachte diesen Sack voll Knochen
als krank, schmutzig und faul;
es sickert und quillt aus ihm heraus,
dem Toren eine Lust.“

Ich nahm die Lehre als Spiegel,
um zu Erkennen und Sehen zu gelangen.
Ich betrachtete diesen Körper,
hohl innen und außen:

Wie dieses ist, so ist jenes,
wie jenes ist, so ist dieses;
wie unten, so oben,
wie oben, so unten;

wie bei Tag, so bei Nacht,
wie bei Nacht, so bei Tag;
wie davor, so dahinter;
wie dahinter, so davor;

Selbst die Musik eines fünfköpfigen Orchesters
kann nicht solchen Genuss bringen,
wie wenn man mit geeintem Geist
richtig den Dhamma klar sieht.

Chapter One

Kulla

I, Kulla, went to a charnel ground
and saw a woman’s body abandoned there,
dumped in a cemetery,
full of worms that devoured.

“See this bag of bones, Kulla—
diseased, filthy, rotten,
oozing and trickling,
a fool’s delight.”

Taking the teaching as a mirror
for realizing knowledge and vision,
I examined this body,
hollow, inside and out.

As this is, so is that;
as that is, so is this.
As below, so above;
as above, so below.

As by day, so by night;
as by night, so by day.
As before, so behind;
as behind, so before.

Even the music of a five-piece band
can never give such pleasure
as when, with unified mind,
you rightly discern the Dhamma.

Paṭhamavagga

Kullattheragāthā

“Kullo sivathikaṁ gantvā,
addasa itthimujjhitaṁ;
Apaviddhaṁ susānasmiṁ,
khajjantiṁ kimihī phuṭaṁ.

Āturaṁ asuciṁ pūtiṁ,
passa kulla samussayaṁ;
Uggharantaṁ paggharantaṁ,
bālānaṁ abhinanditaṁ.

Dhammādāsaṁ gahetvāna,
ñāṇadassanapattiyā;
Paccavekkhiṁ imaṁ kāyaṁ,
tucchaṁ santarabāhiraṁ.

Yathā idaṁ tathā etaṁ,
yathā etaṁ tathā idaṁ;
Yathā adho tathā uddhaṁ,
yathā uddhaṁ tathā adho.

Yathā divā tathā rattiṁ,
yathā rattiṁ tathā divā;
Yathā pure tathā pacchā,
yathā pacchā tathā pure.

Pañcaṅgikena turiyena,
Na ratī hoti tādisī;
Yathā ekaggacittassa,
Sammā dhammaṁ vipassato”ti.
