Wildnis

In Sāvatthī.

Als sie sich zur Seite hingestellt hatte, redete diese Gottheit den Buddha mit einer Strophe an:

„Wenn sie in der Wildnis leben,
nehmen die Friedvollen, die ein geistliches Leben führen,
nur eine Mahlzeit am Tag zu sich:
Warum ist ihre Hautfarbe so klar?“

„Sie trauern der Vergangenheit nicht nach,
noch flehen sie die Zukunft herbei;
vom Gegenwärtigen leben sie,
darum ist ihre Hautfarbe so klar.

Weil sie die Zukunft herbeiflehen
und der Vergangenheit nachtrauern,
vertrocknen die Toren
wie ein abgemähtes grünes Schilfrohr.“

Wilderness

At Sāvatthī.

Standing to one side, that deity addressed the Buddha in verse:

“Living in the wilderness,
peaceful spiritual practitioners
eat just one meal a day:
so why is their complexion so clear?”

“They don’t grieve for the past,
nor do they pray for the future;
they feed on whatever comes that day,
that’s why their complexion’s so clear.

Because they long for the future,
and grieve for the past,
fools wither away,
like a green reed mowed down.”

Araññasutta

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

“Araññe viharantānaṁ,
santānaṁ brahmacārinaṁ;
Ekabhattaṁ bhuñjamānānaṁ,
kena vaṇṇo pasīdatī”ti.

“Atītaṁ nānusocanti,
nappajappanti nāgataṁ;
Paccuppannena yāpenti,
tena vaṇṇo pasīdati.

Anāgatappajappāya,
atītassānusocanā;
Etena bālā sussanti,
naḷova harito luto”ti.

Naḷavaggo paṭhamo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Oghaṁ nimokkhaṁ upaneyyaṁ,
Accenti katichindi ca;
Jāgaraṁ appaṭividitā,
Susammuṭṭhā mānakāminā;
Araññe dasamo vutto,
Vaggo tena pavuccati.
