Shielding the Mind

„Wovon du den Geist abgeschirmt hast,
all das kann dir kein Leiden bringen.
Daher sollst du den Geist von allem abschirmen,
dann bist du von allem Leiden befreit.“

„Du brauchst den Geist nicht von allem abzuschirmen,
der Geist ist auch nicht zu Selbstbeherrschung gelangt.
Du brauchst den Geist nur von dem abzuschirmen,
wo die schlechten Dinge herkommen.“

“Whatever you’ve shielded the mind from
can’t cause you suffering.
So you should shield the mind from everything,
then you’re freed from all suffering.”

“You need not shield the mind from everything,
nor has the mind gained self-control.
The mind need only be shielded
from where the bad things come.”

“Yato yato mano nivāraye,
Na dukkhameti naṁ tato tato;
Sa sabbato mano nivāraye,
Sa sabbato dukkhā pamuccatī”ti.

“Na sabbato mano nivāraye,
Na mano saṁyatattamāgataṁ;
Yato yato ca pāpakaṁ,
Tato tato mano nivāraye”ti.
