In Sāvatthī.

„Mönche und Nonnen, wenn ein edler Schüler fünf Arten von Furcht und Feindschaft gestillt hat, die vier Faktoren des Stromeintritts besitzt und das edle System mit Weisheit klar gesehen und durchdrungen hat, kann er, wenn er will, von sich erklären: ‚Ich habe mit der Wiedergeburt in der Hölle, dem Tierreich und dem Gespensterreich abgeschlossen. Mit allen verlorenen Orten habe ich abgeschlossen, mit allen schlechten Orten, mit der Unterwelt. Ich bin in den Strom eingetreten! Ich muss nicht mehr in der Unterwelt wiedergeboren werden und bin für das Erwachen bestimmt.‘

Was sind die fünf Arten von Furcht und Feindschaft, die er gestillt hat? Jeder, der lebende Geschöpfe tötet … der stiehlt … der sexuelle Verfehlungen begeht … der lügt … oder der Rauschmittel wie Bier, Wein und Branntwein trinkt … Das sind die fünf Arten von Furcht und Feindschaft, die er gestillt hat.

Was sind die vier Faktoren des Stromeintritts, die er besitzt? Da hat ein edler Schüler auf Erfahrung gegründete Zuversicht zum Buddha: zur Lehre … zum Saṅgha … und seine Tugend wird von den Edlen geliebt. Das sind die vier Faktoren des Stromeintritts, die er besitzt.

Und was ist das edle System, das er mit Weisheit klar gesehen und durchdrungen hat? Da gebraucht ein gebildeter edler Schüler den Geist sorgfältig und wohlüberlegt für das abhängige Entstehen selbst … Das ist das edle System, das er mit Weisheit klar gesehen und durchdrungen hat.

Wenn ein edler Schüler diese fünf Arten von Furcht und Feindschaft gestillt hat, diese vier Faktoren des Stromeintritts besitzt und dieses edle System mit Weisheit klar gesehen und durchdrungen hat, kann er, wenn er will, von sich erklären: ‚Ich habe mit der Wiedergeburt in der Hölle, dem Tierreich und dem Gespensterreich abgeschlossen. Mit allen verlorenen Orten habe ich abgeschlossen, mit allen schlechten Orten, mit der Unterwelt. Ich bin in den Strom eingetreten! “Mendicants, when a noble disciple has quelled five fears and enmities, possesses the four factors of stream-entry, and has clearly seen and penetrated the noble system with wisdom, they may, if they wish, declare of themselves: ‘I’ve finished with rebirth in hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. I’ve finished with all places of loss, bad places, the underworld. I am a stream-enterer! I’m not liable to be reborn in the underworld, and am destined for awakening.’

What are the five fears and enmities they have quelled? Killing living creatures … stealing … sexual misconduct … lying … consuming beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants … These are the five fears and enmities they have quelled.

What are the four factors of stream-entry that they possess? It’s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … and their ethical conduct is loved by the noble ones. These are the four factors of stream-entry that they possess.

And what is the noble system that they have clearly seen and penetrated with wisdom? A noble disciple carefully and rationally applies the mind to dependent origination itself … This is the noble system that they have clearly seen and penetrated with wisdom.

When a noble disciple has quelled five fears and enmities, possesses the four factors of stream-entry, and has clearly seen and penetrated the noble system with wisdom, they may, if they wish, declare of themselves: ‘I’ve finished with rebirth in hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. I’ve finished with all places of loss, bad places, the underworld. I am a stream-enterer! I’m not liable to be reborn in the underworld, and am destined for awakening.’”

Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

“Yato kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa pañca bhayāni verāni vūpasantāni honti, catūhi ca sotāpattiyaṅgehi samannāgato hoti, ariyo cassa ñāyo paññāya sudiṭṭho hoti suppaṭividdho, so ākaṅkhamāno attanāva attānaṁ byākareyya: ‘khīṇanirayomhi …pe… avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyano’ti.

Katamāni pañca bhayāni verāni vūpasantāni honti? Yaṁ, bhikkhave, pāṇātipātī …pe… yaṁ, bhikkhave, adinnādāyī … yaṁ, bhikkhave, kāmesumicchācārī … yaṁ, bhikkhave, musāvādī … yaṁ, bhikkhave, surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhāyī …pe… imāni pañca bhayāni verāni vūpasantāni honti.

Katamehi catūhi sotāpattiyaṅgehi samannāgato hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako buddhe …pe… dhamme … saṅghe … ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato hoti. Imehi catūhi sotāpattiyaṅgehi samannāgato hoti.

Katamo cassa ariyo ñāyo paññāya sudiṭṭho hoti suppaṭividdho? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako paṭiccasamuppādaññeva sādhukaṁ yoniso manasi karoti …pe… ayamassa ariyo ñāyo paññāya sudiṭṭho hoti suppaṭividdho.

Yato kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa imāni pañca bhayāni verāni vūpasantāni honti, imehi catūhi sotāpattiyaṅgehi samannāgato hoti, ayañcassa ariyo ñāyo paññāya sudiṭṭho hoti suppaṭividdho, so ākaṅkhamāno attanāva attānaṁ byākareyya: ‘khīṇanirayomhi khīṇatiracchānayoni khīṇapettivisayo khīṇāpāyaduggativinipāto, sotāpannohamasmi avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyano’”ti.
