A Cosmologist
Lokāyatikasutta

Ein Kosmologe
In Sāvatthī.
Da ging ein brahmanischer Kosmologe zum Buddha … Als er sich zur Seite hingesetzt hatte, sagte er zum Buddha:
„Werter Gotama, ist alles?“
„‚Alles ist‘: Das ist die älteste Kosmologie, Brahmane.“
„Dann ist alles nicht?“
„‚Alles ist nicht‘: Das ist die zweite Kosmologie.“
„Nun, ist alles eine Einzigkeit?“
„‚Alles ist eine Einzigkeit‘: Das ist die dritte Kosmologie.“
„Dann ist alles Ausdehnung?“
„‚Alles ist Ausdehnung‘: Das ist die vierte Kosmologie.
Der Klargewordene vermeidet diese beiden Extreme und lehrt den Dhamma auf die mittlere Art: ‚Unwissenheit ist die Bedingung für Willensbildungsprozesse.
Willensbildungsprozesse sind die Bedingung für Bewusstsein. … So kommt diese ganze Masse des Leidens zustande. Wenn Unwissenheit schwindet und restlos aufhört, hören Willensbildungsprozesse auf. Wenn Willensbildungsprozesse aufhören, hört Bewusstsein auf. … So hört diese ganze Masse des Leidens auf.‘“
Auf diese Worte sagte der brahmanische Kosmologe zum Buddha: „Vortrefflich, werter Gotama! Vortrefflich! … Von diesem Tag an soll der werte Gotama mich als Laienschüler in Erinnerung behalten, der für sein ganzes Leben Zuflucht genommen hat.“
A Cosmologist
At Sāvatthī.
Then a brahmin cosmologist went up to the Buddha … Seated to one side he said to the Buddha:
“Worthy Gotama, does all exist?”
“‘All exists’: this is the oldest cosmology, brahmin.”
“Then does all not exist?”
“‘All does not exist’: this is the second cosmology.
“Well, is all oneness?”
“‘All is oneness’: this is the third cosmology.
“Then is all expansiveness?”
“‘All is expansiveness’: this is the fourth cosmology.
Avoiding these two extremes, the Realized One teaches by the middle way: ‘Ignorance is a requirement for choices.
Choices are a requirement for consciousness. … That is how this entire mass of suffering originates. When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, choices cease. When choices cease, consciousness ceases. … That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.’”
When he said this, the brahmin cosmologist said to the Buddha, “Excellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
Lokāyatikasutta
Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.
Atha kho lokāyatiko brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho lokāyatiko brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
“Kiṁ nu kho, bho gotama, sabbamatthī”ti?
“‘Sabbamatthī’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, jeṭṭhametaṁ lokāyataṁ”.
“Kiṁ pana, bho gotama, sabbaṁ natthī”ti?
“‘Sabbaṁ natthī’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, dutiyametaṁ lokāyataṁ”.
“Kiṁ nu kho, bho gotama, sabbamekattan”ti?
“‘Sabbamekattan’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, tatiyametaṁ lokāyataṁ”.
“Kiṁ pana, bho gotama, sabbaṁ puthuttan”ti?
“‘Sabbaṁ puthuttan’ti kho, brāhmaṇa, catutthametaṁ lokāyataṁ.
Ete te, brāhmaṇa, ubho ante anupagamma majjhena tathāgato dhammaṁ deseti: ‘avijjāpaccayā saṅkhārā;
saṅkhārapaccayā viññāṇaṁ …pe… evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. Avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saṅkhāranirodho; saṅkhāranirodhā viññāṇanirodho …pe… evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotī’”ti.
Evaṁ vutte, lokāyatiko brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
