So habe ich es gehört: Einmal hielt sich der Buddha bei Sāvatthī in Jetas Wäldchen auf, dem Kloster des Anāthapiṇḍika.

„Mönche und Nonnen, es gibt Asketen und Brahmanen, die Alter und Tod nicht verstehen, nicht ihren Ursprung, nicht ihr Aufhören und nicht die Übung, die zu ihrem Aufhören führt. Sie erachte ich nicht als wahre Asketen und Brahmanen. Diese Ehrwürdigen verwirklichen nicht das Ziel des Lebens als Asket oder Brahmane, sie leben nicht, indem sie es in eben diesem Leben mit ihrer eigenen Einsicht erkannt haben.

Es gibt Asketen und Brahmanen, die Alter und Tod verstehen, ihren Ursprung, ihr Aufhören und die Übung, die zu ihrem Aufhören führt. Sie erachte ich als wahre Asketen und Brahmanen. Diese Ehrwürdigen verwirklichen das Ziel des Lebens als Asket oder Brahmane, sie leben, indem sie es in eben diesem Leben mit ihrer eigenen Einsicht erkannt haben.“

Old Age and Death

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

“Mendicants, there are ascetics and brahmins who don’t understand old age and death, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation. I don’t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables don’t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and don’t live having realized it with their own insight.

There are ascetics and brahmins who do understand old age and death, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation. I deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Jarāmaraṇasutta

Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tatra kho bhagavā …pe…

“ye hi keci, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā jarāmaraṇaṁ nappajānanti, jarāmaraṇasamudayaṁ nappajānanti, jarāmaraṇanirodhaṁ nappajānanti, jarāmaraṇanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti, na me te, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā samaṇesu vā samaṇasammatā brāhmaṇesu vā brāhmaṇasammatā, na ca pana te āyasmanto sāmaññatthaṁ vā brahmaññatthaṁ vā diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti.

Ye ca kho keci, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā jarāmaraṇaṁ pajānanti …pe… paṭipadaṁ pajānanti, te kho me, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā samaṇesu ceva samaṇasammatā brāhmaṇesu ca brāhmaṇasammatā, te ca panāyasmanto sāmaññatthañca brahmaññatthañca diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharantī”ti.
