In a Sorry State

In einem bemitleidenswerten Zustand

Einmal hielt sich der Buddha bei Sāvatthī auf.

„Mönche und Nonnen, das Umherwandern hat keinen erkennbaren Anfang. Ein Anfangspunkt für das Umherstreifen und Umherwandern der Lebewesen, die von Unwissenheit ummantelt und von Verlangen gefesselt sind, ist nicht ersichtlich. Wenn ihr jemanden in einem bemitleidenswerten Zustand seht, in Bedrängnis, sollt ihr schließen: ‚In all dieser langen Zeit haben auch wir das Gleiche erfahren.‘ Warum ist das so? Das Umherwandern hat keinen erkennbaren Anfang. … Eben das reicht völlig aus, dass ihr in Bezug auf alle Bedingungen ernüchtert werdet, dass eure Leidenschaft schwindet und ihr davon frei werdet.“

In a Sorry State

At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī.

“Mendicants, this transmigration has no known beginning. No first point is found of sentient beings roaming and transmigrating, shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving. When you see someone in a sorry state, in distress, you should conclude: ‘In all this long time, we too have undergone the same thing.’ Why is that? This transmigration has no known beginning. … This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.”

“Anamataggoyaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁsāro. Pubbā koṭi na paññāyati avijjānīvaraṇānaṁ sattānaṁ taṇhāsaṁyojanānaṁ sandhāvataṁ saṁsarataṁ. Yaṁ, bhikkhave, passeyyātha duggataṁ durūpetaṁ niṭṭhamettha gantabbaṁ: ‘amhehipi evarūpaṁ paccanubhūtaṁ iminā dīghena addhunā’ti. Taṁ kissa hetu …pe… yāvañcidaṁ, bhikkhave, alameva sabbasaṅkhāresu nibbindituṁ alaṁ virajjituṁ alaṁ vimuccitun”ti.
