In Sāvatthī.

„Besitz, Ehre und Beliebtheit sind brutal …

Mönche und Nonnen, da sehe ich eine Person, deren Geist von Ehre bezwungen und überwältigt ist. Wenn ihr Körper auseinanderbricht, nach dem Tod, wird sie an einem verlorenen Ort wiedergeboren, einem schlechten Ort, in der Unterwelt, der Hölle.

Dann sehe ich da eine Person, deren Geist davon bezwungen und überwältigt ist, keine Ehre zu erlangen. Wenn ihr Körper auseinanderbricht, nach dem Tod, wird sie an einem verlorenen Ort wiedergeboren, einem schlechten Ort, in der Unterwelt, der Hölle.

Dann sehe ich da eine Person, deren Geist sowohl von Ehre bezwungen und überwältigt ist als auch davon, keine Ehre zu erlangen. Wenn ihr Körper auseinanderbricht, nach dem Tod, wird sie an einem verlorenen Ort wiedergeboren, einem schlechten Ort, in der Unterwelt, der Hölle.

So brutal sind Besitz, Ehre und Beliebtheit … ‚Wir wollen Besitz, Ehre und Beliebtheit aufgeben …‘ So sollt ihr euch schulen.“

Das sagte der Buddha. Und der Heilige, der Lehrer, fuhr fort:

„Ob er geehrt wird
oder nicht geehrt oder beides,
seine Versenkung wankt nicht,
da er beflissen lebt.

Beständig ist seine Vertiefung,
subtil seine Ansicht und seine Klarsicht.
Er erfreut sich an der Auflösung des Ergreifens;
ihn nennt man einen wahren Menschen.“

At Sāvatthī.

“Possessions, honor, and popularity are grim …

Take a case where I see a certain individual whose mind is overcome and overwhelmed by honor. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Take another case where I see a certain individual whose mind is overcome and overwhelmed by lack of honor. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

And take another case where I see a certain individual whose mind is overcome and overwhelmed by both honor and lack of honor. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

So grim are possessions, honor, and popularity. …”

That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

“Whether they’re honored
or not honored, or both,
their immersion doesn’t waver
as they abide in the immeasurables.

They persistently meditate
with subtle view and discernment.
Rejoicing in the ending of grasping,
they’re said to be a true person.”

Sagāthakasutta

Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

“Dāruṇo, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasiloko …pe… adhigamāya.

Idhāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ passāmi sakkārena abhibhūtaṁ pariyādiṇṇacittaṁ, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannaṁ.

Idha panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ passāmi asakkārena abhibhūtaṁ pariyādiṇṇacittaṁ, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannaṁ.

Idha panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ passāmi sakkārena ca asakkārena ca tadubhayena abhibhūtaṁ pariyādiṇṇacittaṁ, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannaṁ.

Evaṁ dāruṇo kho, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasiloko …pe… evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.

Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:

“Yassa sakkariyamānassa,
asakkārena cūbhayaṁ;
Samādhi na vikampati,
appamāṇavihārino.

Taṁ jhāyinaṁ sātatikaṁ,
sukhumaṁ diṭṭhivipassakaṁ;
Upādānakkhayārāmaṁ,
āhu sappuriso itī”ti.

Dasamaṁ.

Paṭhamo vaggo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Dāruṇo baḷisaṁ kummaṁ,
dīghalomi ca mīḷhakaṁ;
Asani diddhaṁ siṅgālaṁ,
verambhena sagāthakanti.
