Rid of Conceit

In Sāvatthī.

Da ging der Ehrwürdige Rāhula zum Buddha, verbeugte sich, setzte sich zur Seite hin und sagte zu ihm:

„Herr, auf welche Art erkennt und sieht man, sodass der Geist sich von Ich-Machen, Mein-Machen und Einbildung für diesen mit Bewusstsein versehenen Körper und für alle Merkmale außerhalb losmacht; und dass er über Unterscheidung hinausgeht und friedvoll und gut befreit ist?“

„Rāhula, wenn man jegliche Art von Form – vergangen, zukünftig oder gegenwärtig, innen oder außen, grob oder subtil, gering oder hochstehend, fern oder nah: jegliche Form – wahrhaftig mit rechter Weisheit sieht: ‚Das ist nicht mein, das bin nicht ich, das ist nicht mein Selbst‘, dann ist man durch Nicht-Ergreifen befreit.

Wenn man jegliche Art von Gefühl … jegliche Art von Wahrnehmung … jegliche Art von Willensbildungsprozessen … jegliche Art von Bewusstsein – vergangen, zukünftig oder gegenwärtig, innen oder außen, grob oder subtil, gering oder hochstehend, fern oder nah: jegliches Bewusstsein – wahrhaftig mit rechter Weisheit sieht: ‚Das ist nicht mein, das bin nicht ich, das ist nicht mein Selbst‘, dann ist man durch Nicht-Ergreifen befreit.

Auf diese Art erkennt und sieht man, sodass der Geist sich von Ich-Machen, Mein-Machen und Einbildung für diesen mit Bewusstsein versehenen Körper und für alle Merkmale außerhalb losmacht; und dass er über Unterscheidung hinausgeht und friedvoll und gut befreit ist.“

Rid of Conceit

At Sāvatthī.

Then Venerable Rāhula went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

“Sir, how does one know and see so that the heart is rid of I-making, mine-making, and conceit for this conscious body and externally for all signs; and going beyond discrimination, it’s peaceful and well freed?”

“Rāhula, when one truly sees any kind of form at all—past, future, or present; internal or external; solid or subtle; inferior or superior; far or near: <em>all</em> form—with right understanding: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self,’ one is freed by not grasping.

When one truly sees any kind of feeling … perception … choices … When one truly sees any kind of consciousness at all—past, future, or present; internal or external; solid or subtle; inferior or superior; far or near: <em>all</em> consciousness—with right understanding: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self,’ one is freed by not grasping.

That’s how to know and see so that the heart is rid of I-making, mine-making, and conceit for this conscious body and externally for all signs; and going beyond discrimination, it’s peaceful and well freed.”

Apagatasutta

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Atha kho āyasmā rāhulo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā rāhulo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

“kathaṁ nu kho, bhante, jānato kathaṁ passato imasmiṁ ca saviññāṇake kāye bahiddhā ca sabbanimittesu ahaṅkāramamaṅkāramānāpagataṁ mānasaṁ hoti vidhā samatikkantaṁ santaṁ suvimuttan”ti?

“Yaṁ kiñci, rāhula, rūpaṁ atītānāgatapaccuppannaṁ ajjhattaṁ vā bahiddhā vā oḷārikaṁ vā sukhumaṁ vā hīnaṁ vā paṇītaṁ vā yaṁ dūre santike vā sabbaṁ rūpaṁ ‘netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya disvā anupādā vimutto hoti.

Yā kāci vedanā …pe… yā kāci saññā … ye keci saṅkhārā … yaṁ kiñci viññāṇaṁ atītānāgatapaccuppannaṁ ajjhattaṁ vā bahiddhā vā oḷārikaṁ vā sukhumaṁ vā hīnaṁ vā paṇītaṁ vā yaṁ dūre santike vā, sabbaṁ viññāṇaṁ ‘netaṁ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya disvā anupādā vimutto hoti.

Vaggo tena pavuccatīti.
