With Maghada
Māgadhasutta
from: Chapter One
Mit Maghada
In Sāvatthī.
Als er sich zur Seite hingestellt hatte, redete der Ortsgott Maghada den Buddha mit einer Strophe an:
„Wie viele Lampen gibt es,
die die Welt erhellen?
Wir sind gekommen, den Buddha zu fragen:
Wie sollen wir das verstehen?“
„Es gibt vier Lampen in der Welt,
eine fünfte findet man nicht.
Die Sonne brennt am Tag,
der Mond leuchtet bei Nacht,
und ein Feuer erhellt
sowohl Tag als auch Nacht.
Aber ein Buddha ist das beste Glühen:
Das ist das unübertreffliche Leuchten.“
With Maghada
At Sāvatthī.
Standing to one side, the godling Maghada addressed the Buddha in verse:
“How many lamps are there
that light up the world?
We’ve come to ask the Buddha;
how are we to understand this?”
“There are four lamps in the world,
a fifth is not found.
The sun blazes by day,
the moon radiates at night,
while a fire illuminates both
by day and by night.
But a Buddha is the best of blazes:
this is the supreme radiance.”
Māgadhasutta
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho māgadho devaputto bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
“Kati lokasmiṁ pajjotā,
yehi loko pakāsati;
Bhavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma,
kathaṁ jānemu taṁ mayan”ti.
“Cattāro loke pajjotā,
pañcamettha na vijjati;
Divā tapati ādicco,
rattimābhāti candimā.
Atha aggi divārattiṁ,
tattha tattha pakāsati;
Sambuddho tapataṁ seṭṭho,
esā ābhā anuttarā”ti.
