Wissen

In Sāvatthī.

Als er sich zur Seite hingesetzt hatte, sagte dieser Mönch zum Buddha:

„Herr, man spricht von dieser Sache, die ‚Wissen‘ genannt wird. Was ist Wissen? Und inwiefern ist ein Mensch wissend?“

„Mönch, da versteht ein gebildeter edler Schüler Form, ihren Ursprung, ihr Aufhören und die Übung, die zu ihrem Aufhören führt. Er versteht Gefühl … Er versteht Wahrnehmung … Er versteht Willensbildungsprozesse … Er versteht Bewusstsein, seinen Ursprung, sein Aufhören und die Übung, die zu seinem Aufhören führt.

Das nennt man Wissen. Und insofern ist ein Mensch wissend.“

Knowledge

At Sāvatthī.

Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:

“Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘knowledge’. What is knowledge? And how is a knowing one defined?”

“Mendicant, it’s when a learned noble disciple understands form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They understand feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

This is called knowledge. And this is how a knowing one is defined.”

Vijjāsutta

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

“‘vijjā, vijjā’ti, bhante, vuccati. Katamā nu kho, bhante, vijjā; kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotī”ti?

“Idha, bhikkhu, sutavā ariyasāvako rūpaṁ pajānāti, rūpasamudayaṁ … rūpanirodhaṁ … rūpanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ pajānāti. Vedanaṁ … saññaṁ … saṅkhāre pajānāti …pe… viññāṇanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ pajānāti.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, vijjā; ettāvatā ca vijjāgato hotī”ti.
