In Sāvatthī.

Da ging ein Mönch zum Buddha … und sagte zu ihm: „Herr, man spricht von diesem Ding, das ‚das geistliche Leben‘ genannt wird. Was ist dieses geistliche Leben? Und was ist der Höhepunkt des geistlichen Lebens?“

„Mönch, das geistliche Leben ist einfach dieser edle achtfache Pfad: nämlich rechte Ansicht, rechtes Denken, rechte Rede, rechtes Verhalten, rechter Lebenserwerb, rechter Einsatz, rechte Achtsamkeit und rechte Versenkung. Die Auflösung von Gier, Hass und Täuschung – das ist der Höhepunkt des geistlichen Lebens.“

At Sāvatthī.

Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and asked him, “Sir, they speak of this thing called the ‘spiritual path’. What is the spiritual path? And what is the culmination of the spiritual path?”

“Mendicant, the spiritual path is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. The ending of greed, hate, and delusion. This is the culmination of the spiritual path.”

Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “‘brahmacariyaṁ, brahmacariyan’ti, bhante, vuccati. Katamaṁ nu kho, bhante, brahmacariyaṁ, katamaṁ brahmacariyapariyosānan”ti?

“Ayameva kho, bhikkhu, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo brahmacariyaṁ, seyyathidaṁ— sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Yo kho, bhikkhu, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo— idaṁ brahmacariyapariyosānan”ti.
