„Mönche und Nonnen, angenommen, da würde jemand sagen: ‚Ohne die edlen Wahrheiten vom Leiden, vom Ursprung des Leidens, vom Aufhören des Leidens und von der Übung, die zum Aufhören des Leidens führt, wahrhaftig zu verstehen, will ich richtig dem Leiden ein Ende machen.‘ Das ist nicht möglich.

Wie wenn jemand sagen würde: ‚Bevor das Untergeschoss eines Giebelhauses gebaut ist, will ich das Obergeschoss hochziehen.‘ Das ist nicht möglich. Ebenso ist es, wenn jemand sagen würde: ‚Ohne die edlen Wahrheiten vom Leiden, vom Ursprung des Leidens, vom Aufhören des Leidens und von der Übung, die zum Aufhören des Leidens führt, wahrhaftig zu verstehen, will ich richtig dem Leiden ein Ende machen.‘ Das ist nicht möglich.

Aber angenommen, da würde jemand sagen: ‚Nachdem ich die edlen Wahrheiten vom Leiden, vom Ursprung des Leidens, vom Aufhören des Leidens und von der Übung, die zum Aufhören des Leidens führt, wahrhaftig erfasst habe, will ich richtig dem Leiden ein Ende machen.‘ Das ist möglich.

Wie wenn jemand sagen würde: ‚Nachdem das Untergeschoss eines Giebelhauses gebaut ist, will ich das Obergeschoss hochziehen.‘ Das ist möglich. Ebenso ist es, wenn jemand sagen würde: ‚Nachdem ich die edlen Wahrheiten vom Leiden, vom Ursprung des Leidens, vom Aufhören des Leidens und von der Übung, die zum Aufhören des Leidens führt, wahrhaftig erfasst habe, will ich richtig dem Leiden ein Ende machen.‘ Das ist möglich.

Aus diesem Grund sollt ihr Meditation üben – um zu verstehen: ‚Das ist das Leiden.‘ … ‚Das ist die Übung, die zum Aufhören des Leidens führt.‘“

A Bungalow

“Mendicants, suppose someone were to say: ‘Without truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.’ That is not possible.

It’s as if someone were to say: ‘Before the lower story of a bungalow is built, I will hoist up the upper story.’ That is not possible. In the same way, suppose someone were to say: ‘Without truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.’ That is not possible.

But suppose someone were to say: ‘After truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.’ That is possible.

It’s as if someone were to say: ‘After the lower story of a bungalow is built, I will hoist up the upper story.’ That is possible. In the same way, suppose someone were to say: ‘After truly comprehending the noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, I will completely make an end of suffering.’ That is possible.

That’s why you should practice meditation …”

Kūṭāgārasutta

“Yo hi, bhikkhave, evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ahaṁ dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ anabhisamecca …pe… dukkhanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaṁ karissāmī’ti— netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yo evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ahaṁ kūṭāgārassa heṭṭhimaṁ gharaṁ akaritvā uparimaṁ gharaṁ āropessāmī’ti— netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, yo evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ahaṁ dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ anabhisamecca …pe… dukkhanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaṁ karissāmī’ti— netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti.
