73. The training rule on defecating while standing

Final ruling

“‘When not sick, I will not defecate or urinate while standing,’ this is how you should train.”

If one is not sick, one should not defecate or urinate while standing. If, out of disrespect, a monk who is not sick defecates or urinates while standing, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Non-offenses

There is no offense: if it is unintentional; if he is not mindful; if he does not know; if he is sick; if there is an emergency; if he is insane; if he is the first offender.

The thirteenth training rule is finished.

73. Ṭhitouccārasikkhāpada

Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiyā bhikkhū ṭhitā uccārampi passāvampi karonti …pe….

“Na ṭhito agilāno uccāraṁ vā passāvaṁ vā karissāmīti sikkhā karaṇīyā”ti.

Na ṭhitena agilānena uccāro vā passāvo vā kātabbo. Yo anādariyaṁ paṭicca ṭhito agilāno uccāraṁ vā passāvaṁ vā karoti, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

Anāpatti— asañcicca …pe… ādikammikassāti.
