Umgeben von Löwen und Tigern,
von Leoparden, Bären und Büffeln,
von gefleckten Hirschen und Wildschweinen,
so lebte ich im Wald.

Niemand hatte Angst vor mir,
noch fürchtete ich mich vor ihnen.
Von der Macht der Liebe getragen
erfreute ich mich damals im Wald.“

“When in a wood I was Sāma the black,
created by Sakka.
I led the lions and tigers
in the forest by love.

Surrounded by lions and tigers,
leopards, bears, buffaloes,
spotted deer, and wild boar,
I stayed in the forest.

None were scared of me,
nor I of them.
Sustained by the power of love
I delighted in the forest then.”

Suvaṇṇasāmacariya

“Sāmo yadā vane āsiṁ,
sakkena abhinimmito;
Pavane sīhabyagghe ca,
mettāya mupanāmayiṁ.

Sīhabyagghehi dīpīhi,
acchehi mahisehi ca;
Pasadamigavarāhehi,
parivāretvā vane vasiṁ.

Na maṁ koci uttasati,
napi bhāyāmi kassaci;
Mettābalenupatthaddho,
ramāmi pavane tadā”ti.
