Vītasoka
Der Barbier kam,
um meinen Kopf zu scheren.
Ich griff nach einem Spiegel
und betrachtete meinen Körper.
Mein Körper erschien hohl;
einst war ich blind, doch die Dunkelheit verschwand.
Meine schöne Frisur ist abgeschnitten:
Künftige Leben wird es jetzt nicht mehr geben.
Chapter Three
Vītasoka
The barber approached
to shave my head.
I picked up a mirror
and examined my body.
My body appeared hollow;
I once was blind, but the darkness disappeared.
My fancy hairdo has been cut off:
now there’ll be no more future lives.

kappako upasaṅkami;
Tato ādāsamādāya,
sarīraṁ paccavekkhisaṁ.
Tuccho kāyo adissittha,
andhakāro tamo byagā;
